Emran has been a professor of psychiatry at Tehran University of Medical Sciences since 1991. Previously, as director of the Iranian government’s Bureau of Youth Health, he focused on the complex problem of drug abuse. He chairs several research and prevention associations, including the Directing Board of the Scientific Association on Addictions, and also serves on the Iranian National Committee on Drug Related Harm Reduction. As director of Prevention Affairs at the Iranian Welfare Organization, and later as the Director of the Office for Mental Health at the Ministry of Health, he lead teams of experts charged with devising and implementing Iran’s first national drug prevention, treatment, and harm reduction strategy. Emran founded the Iranian National Center for Addiction Studies, a research and training institute that now acts as a subregional knowledge hub for WHO-EMRO. He also helped found the Middle East and North Africa Harm Reduction Association. On multiple occasions, Emran has served on drug-related committees of the WHO. Currently he is chairing the Iranian Board of Psychiatry Exam Committee. His current focus is on “Community-based drug related interventions from a game theory perspective.”
