Sharmila currently serves as the Director of External Affairs at the Medical Research Council. She is also Chair of the Human Tissue Authority and is a regular contributor to the media on medical research and science policy issues in the UK. Sharmila has also has non-executive roles at: the Pension Protection Fund a £2bn pension fund responsible for settling the pensions of employees who’s companies have become insolvent; and the Parliamentary and Health service Ombudsman, dealing with complaints from members of the public about services they have received from the state including the UK’s National Health Service. She was directly involved in the commissioning of £1bn of primary health care services for the population of East Sussex, which includes the largest elderly population in the UK as well as some of the most deprived areas of Southern England. She was also appointed by the UK Government to the board of the Charity Commission responsible for regulating the whole of the charitable and voluntary sector in England and Wales. Previously, she was the Chief Operating Officer for BBC Future Media & Technology. She was honored as an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) by the Queen for services to medical research.
