Event description:

Join us for an enlightening discussion with journalist and 2019 World Fellow Onur Burçak Belli on freedom of the press, expression, and opinion in a transitional world through examples from Turkey. Refreshments will be served.
Around the world, the rise of populist movements under strong, power-monopolizing, ‘charismatic’ leader figures have steered to crumbling of democratic systems and de-institutionalization processes, in which authorities feel unrestrained and unbound to carry out any policy without fear of public backlash. Such dramatic developments have marked a media dimension and driven a severe erosion of the freedom of the press.
The clampdown on the independent media outlets and attacks on journalism have especially been severe in contexts where democratic institutions are already weak. Hence, the consequences have been crippling, even lethal, in countries with ‘hybrid’ and ‘perpetually transitioning’ regimes such as Hungary, Poland, Russia and Turkey – no matter how demographically and culturally very different they are from one another.
