Challenging Domestic Violence in Cameroon and Colombia
November 20, 2020 @ 5:30 pm - 6:30 pm
The Yale Globalist and the International Students‘ Organization will co-host the discussion, “Challenging Domestic Violence in Cameroon and Colombia,” featuring 2020 World Fellow Edwan Ngum Tah and 2019 World Fellow Cristina Vélez Valencia. Panelists will discuss their work against gender based violence in their countries. As the Executive Director of the Center for Public Interest Law in Cameroon, Edwan represents women and young girls in the courts for gender based violence and child marriage cases. Additionally, she is a part of a legal team that drafted a child marriage ban legislation that is currently awaiting adoption at the National Assembly. Cristina Vélez Valencia previously served as the Secretary of Women's Affairs in Bogotá. During her time in this role, she was involved in designing a teenage pregnancy reduction project and oversaw five protection centers for victims of gender based violence. These programs offered services and support to women of all ages, through access to both physical and mental healthcare.
