
Reed Schuler is Governor Jay Inslee’s Senior Policy Advisor for Climate and Sustainability, and the Governor's Special Advisor for Pandemic Health Response. Reed advises the governor on climate policy and leads his legislative, regulatory, and communications strategy for climate policy, managing leading coalitions such as the U.S. Climate Alliance, and advises the governor on COVID-19 containment and health response. Previously, Reed served at the U.S. Department of State as a U.S. negotiator for the Paris Agreement on climate change and as a member of Secretary of State John Kerry's Policy Planning Staff. As a Paris Agreement negotiator, he managed the U.S. diplomatic effort to galvanize all countries in the world to submit ambitious climate action targets, and also served on the small team that negotiated the groundbreaking 2014 U.S.-China presidential announcement of the U.S. and Chinese climate targets.
Reed has conducted research as a Fulbright Fellow in Shanghai, China, led a strategy initiative with Mass Audubon and the social impact consulting group New Sector Alliance, and started a community-based energy efficiency program for the Baltimore Office of Sustainability and the Baltimore Community Foundation. He is a recipient of the Switzer Fellowship for environmental leadership and two Superior Honor Awards from the State Department, a member of the National Committee for U.S.-China Relations and the Evergreen Advisory Board, and a graduate of Pomona College and Yale Law School.
