Film Screening: Navalny

The World Fellows program will host a screening of the Oscar-winning film “Navalny,” which details the 2020 assassination attempt of Russian opposition leader and former World Fellow Alexei Navalny. The film screening will be followed by a Q&A with Christo Grozev, an investigative journalist with Bellingcat; Leonid Volkov, 2018 World Fellow and Navalny’s chief of staff; and Anna Biriukova, 2024 World Fellow and a pollster at the Anti-Corruption Foundation. This event is open to the public, but registration is requested.

The entire Yale World Fellows family is heartbroken by reports that Alexey Navalny, courageous Russian opposition leader and anti-corruption dissident, has died. Alexey was a Yale World Fellow from the class of 2010, who embodied the ideals of the open society and dedicated his life to the pursuit of a better Russia. Alexey Navalny

Alexey Navalny is the leader of Russian opposition and the founder of the Anti-Corruption Foundation. He has become well-known for his anti-corruption investigations against Russian state corporations and senior officials. Alexey participated in Russian presidential election in 2018, and in the course of the campaign he opened 81 regional headquarters all over the country. 41 of them are currently in operation, which makes his network the biggest opposition organization in Russia. In August 2020 Alexey was attacked with a Novichok nerve agent by Russian operatives and later sentenced to 9 years in a maximum security penal colony on charges of fraud and contempt of court. Investigative Insights into Putin's Worldwide Malign Networks

2024 World Fellow Anna Biriukova will lead a discussion with investigative journalist Christo Grozev (Spiegel, The Insider, ex-Bellingcat). Grozev’s investigations into the identity of the suspects involved in the 2018 poisoning of Sergei and Yulia Skripal earned him and his team the European Press Prize for Investigative Journalism.
